What I Wore Wednesday & How I Came to my Fashion Senses (finally!)

I used to think that a person’s fashion-dom was marked on their genes- you either had it or you didn’t.

And I was doomed.

In high school and college, I accepted my role of thrift-wearing, cheaply-accessorizing girl because everyone has to wear clothes, and if you’re not fashionable by nature, it doesn’t really matter what you put on.

As a teacher, I filled my closet with passable teacher clothes- dress pants and decent shirts (and I could only wear jeans on Fridays).

When I became a stay-at-home mom, sweatpants, jeans and T-shirts (with spit up on each shoulder, of course) became my uniform.

Only since I moved overseas two years ago have I found my own sense of style and the freedom to express it with confidence. I’ve come to see that fashion is in the eye of the beholder. I would never wear most of the trends that prance down the runway, but that doesn’t mean I’m not “fashionable”.

To browse around a store and pick out things that appeal to me, try them on and evaluate how they look on me, and then to piece together clothes and shoes and accessories that I like, that suit my lifestyle and my tastes, (and our budget)… that’s fashion, baby!

I just hate it took me almost thirty years to realize this and to feel comfortable in my own skin clothes.

So without further ado, here’s my first What I Wore Wednesday:

This is what I wore today to go out to lunch and walk through the outdoor bazaar with my family…and I like how I look!

Dress from Migros: $3.90
Scarf from little local shop: $2.79
Boots from a local boutique: $35

If you’re a tired mommy, and you don’t feel very trendy, much less “fashionable”, take heart! If this girl could find her own sense of style and start to dress in ways that please me (and my husband) and feel good to me, you can too!

(And it doesn’t have to cost a lot either!)

  1. Sheila! I love this! You look so darling and your confidence just shows all over. Too, too cute.

I am so the same way. It's taken me a long (!) time to be brave enough to choose clothes that are right for me, but I am finally having so much fun doing it.

So glad you are joining in, mama!
